Match Report | Alvechurch Women 3-1 Redditch United Women

It’s been three months since The Reds last played a competitive match and today a new look Redditch United Women kicked off their season under the stewardship of first team manager Matt Bailey.

The Reds travelled to The Hayes Playing Fields to face local rivals Alvechurch Women in game week one of the West Midlands Regional League Division One South.

Alvechurch Women have had much change too during the summer with former Kidderminster Harriers Women boss David Healey given to task to manage the team after former manager Dean Saunders left a couple of months ago.

The weather was a sweltering 25c at kick off which left difficult conditions for both sets of players in the unbearable heat.

There was a chance for The Church after six minutes, but Red’s keeper Annie Davies pulled off a great save down to her right-hand side.

Three minutes The Reds took the lead after that Alvechurch passed the ball back to their goalkeeper who picked the ball up and the referee deemed it to be back pass and gave Redditch a free kick at the edge of the box.

Chloe Bailey teed up captain Jade Guppy who hit the ball past the Alvechurch goalkeeper into the right-hand side of the net. It was some strike!

Six minutes later The Church somewhat fortuity levelled the game through Giselle Kutia-Calame after The Reds failed to clear the ball on three occasions and the ball was slotted past Red’s keeper Annie Davies in net.

Just after the twenty-minute mark Redditch had a great chance to retake the lead when Chloe Bailey’s corner was met by Jade Guppy’s head but unfortunately the ball hit the post.

The Church added their second and third goals respectively through Giselle Kutia-Calame just before the half hour mark as The Reds were punished for their mistakes.

There were no more real chances before the half time break which meant The Reds had it all to do to try and get a positive result on opening day.

The Reds had the majority of the play throughout the game and the second half really showed that as Redditch restricted Alvechurch to any opportunities on goal.

Shortly after the restart winger Chloe Bailey went on a driving run down the wing which led to her putting in a fantastic cross which Jade Guppy meets but couldn’t get a proper connection on the ball.

Ten minutes after midfielder Jenny Bugg-Millar spotted the keeper off her line and tried her luck but her shot went over the bar.

Fifteen minutes from time Chloe Bailey put in another fantastic cross which Jade Guppy took the ball down under her control before shooting but the Alvechurch keeper made a quality save to deny The Reds skipper.

The first match of the new season ended in defeat for The Reds, but they can be encouraged with how they played out there. Redditch restricted Alvechurch especially in the second half with The Reds pushing for a positive result throughout which will give them the believe and confidence going into the next few games.

Next up for The Reds is a trip to Herefordshire to take on Hereford Pegasus Ladies in the first round qualifiers of this season’s Vitality FA Cup on Sunday 10th September 2023 with a scheduled kick off time of 14:00pm.

More information regarding this fixture will be announced in due course. Thank you all for your continued support. Up the Reds!!
