It was a break from league action for both sides as Redditch welcomed Rugby Town Women to The Valley Stadium – Powered By Impact Performance in The Birmingham County FA Vase First Round on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds were looking to continue their winning streak after winning their past two league encounters against Long Itchington Ladies and Sedgley & Gornal United Women respectively.

Rugby Town Women were on the other side of the coin after as they were searching for their first win of the season.

Last time out Rugby drew 5-5 against Alvechurch Women at Butlin Road. The Reds travelled to The Dell Stadium to take on Sedgley & Gornal United Women and came out 6-2 winners thanks to four goals from Chloe Bailey and a goal each for Liv Burke and Nieve Newman to send Redditch to seventh in the table.

The Reds started the game poorly and were punished with two minutes on the clock after a defensive mix up Rugby pounced to score the opening goal.

Redditch looked to immediately reply and were unfortunate not to equalise after Emily Owen had a burst of pace down the left channel and put in a quality cross, but Cassandra Kameni-Siewe’s effort was saved by the keeper from close range.

The visitors then had two opportunities to double their lead after a long-range effort was pushed out for a corner by Red’s keeper Megan Burton and then from the resulting corner Rugby had a free header in the box which was superbly saved by Megan Burton in the Redditch net.

Five minutes later The Reds equalised after a fantastic corner was played into the box from Chloe Bailey which was met by Casey Ryder with a bullet of a header to equalise.

Rugby Town retook the lead four minutes later after another defensive error in the Redditch defence was punished and the shot looped over Megan Burton into the net.

Immediately after The Reds nearly scored after a carbon copy of the first goal. Chloe Bailey played in the corner which fell again to Casey Ryder, but her shot was somehow cleared off the line to keep the visitors 2-1 up.

Ten minutes later Redditch was back in it after some excellent play and feet by Jade Guppy who played in Cherelle Archibald who expertly tucked the ball into the net to score on her debut with an excellent finish.

Shortly after the visitors retook the lead after another long-range effort went into the net but then The Reds two minutes later equalised after Lucy Driver played in a lovely through ball to Chloe Bailey who made no mistake with a powerful strike past the keeper.

Just before the break Rugby hit the bar from a direct free kick which meant the side went into the break at 3-3 after a manic first half of action.

Into the second half and neither side had a clear-cut opportunity until the 57th after the visitors went back into the lead after a long-range effort goes in the Redditch net.

Chloe Bailey tried her luck with a direct free kick, but the ball went over the bar. Then a minute later The Reds were awarded a free kick in their own half. Ellie Baker floated a ball into the penalty area which Jade Guppy took down the ball and slotted the ball home which a superb finish to equalise for Redditch for the fourth time in the game.

Three minutes later Red’s keeper Annine Davies (Who came on at half time for Megan Burton) was forced into a really good save from close range to keep the scores all square.

In the 78th minute Chloe Bailey with some great play played in Jade Guppy who held up the ball expertly, but her shot was saved by the keeper to keep the scores level.

Five minutes later the visitors got the winner after a corner was played in a met with a near post header leaving keeper Annie Davies with no chance to make it 5-4 to Rugby.

It was a breathless game of football for the neutral but for The Reds it was a disappointing display, and the defeat was a product of their own downfall which I am sure manager Matt Bailey and the players will try to put right in the next fixture.

The Red’s can bring out positives from the game despite the cup exit. They showed great determination and character to come back four times after going behind four times.
